13 Reasons Why: Resources for Challenging Conversations

The Netflix series and book, 13 Reasons Why, is about tough issues, including the impact of bullying and struggling with depression.

The story explores a teenage girl’s motivations for committing suicide. She recorded audio tapes along her journey that explain how different people and situations in her life impacted her. After her death, the tapes are sent to the people who were part of her story.

It’s a complicated and sometimes graphic book and series, but it does provide opportunities for families to start challenging conversations with their teens about topics such as bullying, depression and suicide.

We’ve gathered resources to help our families ensure the emotional well-being of our students. Please contact the WOHS lead school counselor, Mrs. Sandra Young (  for information to help you navigate these tough, but critically important, conversations.
